Introducing Compartment
The Compartment collection is an exploration of identity told through the language of materials. It began with the architectural line of a drawing, an idea that now finds new expression in the texture of raw linen and the history of handmade paints. This work suggests that, like these materials, our identities are layered, complex, and irreducible. It is a testament to the beauty that emerges when our varied stories and influences are not separated, but are allowed to coalesce into a single, graceful form.

The Artist’s Way.
Laura Clay’s work explores the intersection of bicultural identity, abstraction, and materiality, blending organic textures with structured forms to reflect the tension between chaos and order. Using handmade pigments, fine-line detailing, and layered compositions, she creates immersive pieces that invite viewers to consider the fluidity and duality of personal and cultural identity.
-
Laura’s practice is rooted in material intentionality. She works with handmade paints crafted from natural pigments, including cochineal—a rich red derived from insects found on Mexican nopal cacti. Used for centuries in Indigenous art and textiles, cochineal connects her work to history, heritage, and the artisans who came before her.
