COMPARTMENT
An exploration into the spaces we hold within ourselves, between cultures, memories, and materials.
48× 60 inches, Oil on Jute , 2026
The Compartment series bridges my practices in painting and drawing, translating a single concept across two distinct material languages. It began with a foundational drawing—an idea about form and identity captured in the precision of archival ink. That same idea is now re-explored on raw linen, where the architectural line gives way to the texture of handmade oil paints.
Each piece is a meditation on the spaces we inhabit—between cultures, memories, and materials. It is a dialogue between the controlled gesture of the pen and the fluid expression of the brush, each medium offering a different perspective on the interplay between structure and the self.

Inspired by the moody grandeur of New South Wales, Blue Mountains evokes the sensation of standing at the edge of misty cliffs as clouds drift across a boundless sky. Part of Laura Clay’s Windows of the World collection, this painting captures not just a view—but a feeling of vast, expansive calm.
Rendered in luminous layers of sky blues, cool greys, and muted golds, the work balances softness and depth. The clouds pulse with movement while a pale lavender-pink border anchors the composition—a subtle nod to the frame of a window or a quiet invitation to gaze further. The palette and brushwork reflect the atmospheric complexity of the region, where light and shadow shift with the breeze.
Elegant and introspective, Blue Mountains offers a meditative moment in miniature, a reminder of stillness, sky, and space.
Intentionality is at the top of the list for Laura. Learn more about what it takes to get to a finished work and how important it is to stay educated as a collector.

There is a tunnel at the entrance of Guanajuato where everyone holds their breath. Three kilometers carved through the mountain along the bed of an old river, and somewhere in the dark you hold a wish without quite knowing what you're wishing for.
When you come out the other side, the sky opens over the city. Stone streets climbing the hillside. Alleyways so narrow the balconies nearly touch overhead. My family has been arriving here this way for generations.
Dusty mauve, soft gray, the blue that comes just before color decides what it wants to be.

Gold Coast captures the warmth of late afternoon light as it filters through clouds, shifting from creamy whites to radiant golds and sunlit blues. Painted with pigments sourced in Sydney, this work is infused with personal memory and place-based color.
The title nods to the coastal horizon lines of Australia, where sky meets sea in wide, uninterrupted spans. Here, Laura balances saturated color with soft detail, offering a composition that feels expansive and grounded all at once.

Burano is rich with contrast and quietude. Named after the colorful island near Venice, the piece balances golden ochre and cornflower blue in a seamless gradient. A soft, hazy square at center appears as if it were cut from the sky and gently embedded into its frame.
The outer edges pulse with warmth, while the inner clouds feel distant and slow-moving. There is a sacred stillness in the form, like the hush of a small town at sunrise. Laura Clay’s treatment of light and shape gives the work both softness and formality.
Burano is a contemplative window into subtle color play and the poetry of still air and was created using the last of her grandmother’s paints alongside pigments sourced from Venice, Italy.

Referencing the Dallas airport of the same name, Love Field speaks to the magic of departure and the poetry of return. Cool neutrals and grounding pinks form the backdrop for floating squares, like runway lights, or memories coming into focus. This work celebrates the beauty of movement and the quiet anticipation of a journey, both external and internal.

Darling Harbor is a bold, architectural composition filled with motion and mood. Inspired by Sydney’s skyline reflecting over water, this large-scale piece blends fluid skies with the structure of three stacked vertical windows.
Each rectangle is rendered in subtle gradients that shift from deep indigo to mist gray. The backdrop moves with atmospheric clouds in blue, charcoal, and aqua. The painting holds a precise balance between geometry and gesture, echoing the city’s blend of natural beauty and contemporary rhythm.
Sophisticated and immersive, Darling Harbor invites contemplation and anchors a room with quiet strength.

A study in contrast and conviction, Don Quixote by Laura Clay captures the spirit of noble defiance and internal duality. Rendered in gestural layers flanking a serene, geometric column, this work explores the tension between chaos and order, an echo of Clay’s own experience as a Mexican American artist navigating bicultural identity.
Drawing from Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting, Clay’s compositions often juxtapose intuitive, organic marks with crisp, architectural forms. In Don Quixote, the warm, earth-toned palette pulses with movement and cultural resonance, while the central band offers a moment of calm as a literal and metaphorical spine anchoring the work. This dynamic interplay invites reflection on identity, heritage, and the quietly heroic task of balancing them.
Whether viewed as a modern homage to Cervantes’ knight or a deeply personal visual meditation, Don Quixote commands attention and contemplation.

Bold and layered, Roasted Turkey anchors the Family Style series like the dish itself anchors a holiday table. Its textured surface and rich palette conjure feelings of tradition, warmth, and familial complexity.
Built in concentric frames, the composition echoes both the structure of a formal meal and the layered conversations that unfold across generations. Color spills and organic marks break from the geometry, introducing a sense of spontaneity and memory—like gravy on linen or laughter in the kitchen.
Roasted Turkey carries weight and presence, making it a statement piece that holds space and story. Perfect for collectors who find beauty in both structure and chaos, this work celebrates the depth of connection found in family rituals.

With cool tones and minimal structure, Cream Spinach offers a quiet pause in the Family Style series. This work explores the beauty of restraint, using soft transitions and geometric framing to evoke the measured rhythm of passed plates and shared glances around a dinner table.
A study in tonal subtlety, the piece moves from pale ivory to a delicate greenish-gray, creating a visual gradient that feels both grounded and ephemeral. The central form mirrors a serving dish or folded napkin—simple but full of ritual meaning.
This painting is ideal for spaces that invite reflection. Like its namesake dish, Cream Spinach is understated but essential, a balancing element that brings cohesion and calm to a larger gathering.
